Power Poll: Winnacunnet has No. 1 spot to itselfStaff report
November 13. 2017 11:59PM
The tie has been broken.
For the first time since Sept. 26, there is only one team atop the weekly Union Leader New Hampshire High School Power Poll. That one team, Winnacunnet of Hampton, stayed unbeaten by winning its Division I semifinal, against Goffstown, while in the other semi, the previous co-No. 1, Salem, suffered its first loss, to Pinkerton of Derry. The Warriors and Blue Devils had been tied for No. 1 for five straight weeks.
Winnacunnet tops the poll, by itself, for the first time since Oct. 9, 2012. The Warriors won the state Division II crown that season.
The Warriors-Astros state championship, set for this coming Saturday at 6 p.m. at UNH’s Wildcat Stadium, will be a matchup of the Power Poll’s No. 1 and No. 2 teams. Thus, it should go a long way toward determining the Power Poll champ as well.
Salem dropped to third in this week’s poll, followed by Plymouth Regional (10-0), Division II’s only unbeaten team. The Bobcats will tangle with Bow in Saturday’s 2:30 p.m. Division II championship at UNH.
The Falcons (8-2), previously unranked, vaulted to eighth in this week’s poll after topping previously unbeaten Hanover in a Division II semifinal.
