Johnny Burgess, the owner of Team Burgess MMA, set a world record for most one-inch pine boards broken by hand in one hour at the Downtown Radisson Hotel in Manchester on Friday night.
Burgess broke 3,676 boards according to the official early tally, and will now be entered into the Guinness Book of World Records. The karate expert accomplished one of his lifetime goals prior to the start of the Combat Zone 64 card of pro and amateur MMA and amateur kickboxing action.
"The previous record was set in September and we just passed it by more than 400 boards," said Burgess, 49, afterward while soaking his bloodied and swollen hands in ice water. "Mentally, I never had any doubt that I could do this. The only question was if my hands could hold up, and luckily they did. When they finish all of the counting, I think the final official tally will be more than 3,700 boards."
The entire amount of the money raised through sponsorships and cash contributions, which will still be accepted, will be donated to the Aflac Cancer and Blood Disorders Center at Children's Healthcare of Atlanta.
"This took a lot of planning and it was a lot of work. Hopefully, we raise a lot of money to help the kids," said Burgess, who heads up the Aflac Insurance agencies in New Hampshire.
