Northern Pass to hold supplier job fairs Dec. 13, Jan. 10

December 05. 2017 12:59AM

CONCORD — The proposed Northern Pass project, still awaiting state approval, is hosting two job and supplier fairs, inviting job seekers and businesses looking to boost their sales by helping to serve the project.

Northern Pass spokesman Kaitlyn Woods said people can apply for jobs, and businesses can circulate their names among contractors to cultivate business relationships.

“To begin construction of a project this size in April, Northern Pass will require a massive team of workers and subcontractors, one of the many unique benefits of this project for New Hampshire,” Woods said.

“Holding these job and supplier fairs now will help ensure we have the workforce needed to successfully begin construction, as well as provide an opportunity for local workers to learn more about the specific employment opportunities this project is bringing to the state,” Woods said.

Northern Pass will host two jobs and supplier fairs, Dec. 13 at Mountain View Grand Resort, Whitefield; and Grappone Conference Center, Concord, on Jan. 10. Both run 3 to 8 p.m.

The proposed $1.6 billion project, which runs through more than 30 communities, needs a handful of state and federal approvals before it can start operating by late 2020.

The route runs from Pittsburg to Deerfield and includes 60 miles of buried lines.

Northern Pass said the project will create an estimated 2,600 construction jobs, but one project economist counted one construction worker employed for three years on Northern Pass as three jobs.

Jack Savage from the Society for the Protection of New Hampshire Forests questioned the timing.

“They’re trying to create the perception they’re going to have jobs to hand out and that’s good PR,” Savage said, but the project doesn’t have approval from the Site Evaluation Committee. “Without a SEC permit, they’re not.”
