HOOKSETT — Police investigating a report of a man and woman acting suspiciously near Londonderry Turnpike and Whitehall Road Monday arrested a Manchester man on drug, gun and other charges, police said Tuesday.

According to a release, officers who had been told a woman was stumbling in the area with a man holding her up found the pair, who allegedly gave police fake names when questioned.

After the two had agreed to a search, police said, officers found marijuana bagged for sale, drug paraphernalia and a loaded .45 caliber, semi-automatic handgun on Jose Montanez, 37, of Manchester.

Montanez was on parole, police said, so he was charged with being a career criminal in possession of a firearm, possession of a firearm with an altered serial number and possession of drugs with intent to sell, as well as obstructing government administration for providing a false name.

Montanez was placed on a 72-hour probation hold and refused bail. He was held in the Merrimack County jail pending video arraignment in Merrimack County Superior Court on Tuesday.

The woman was not charged, police said.
