MANCHESTER — A single mother of three on the tightest of budgets, Carrie’s plans for Christmas presents were put on hold with an unexpected increase in rent.
While she had heard of the Union Leader Santa Fund for the Salvation Army, it took a little coaxing from her mother to convince Carrie to apply.
“She said, ‘Do it. Just do it,’” Carrie said. “I was hesitant. I thought there’s people that need it more. She was like ‘You’re in the same boat. You can do it.’”
Carrie heeded her mother’s advice and said it’s a relief to know that come Christmas morning, there will be something under the tree for her 10-year-old daughter and two sons, ages 5 and 2.
“I’ve only heard good things,” she said of the Santa Fund. “It’s a beneficial thing for the kids.”
Although she has a full-time job with benefits, Carrie said her take-home pay goes quickly to cover a list of expenses including rent, utilities and daycare.
“Some people hear that and they think you’re rolling in the money,” she said. “I wasn’t prepared for my rent to go up so much.”
With a little help from the Santa Fund, Carrie is now trying to figure out just what to get her kids when it’s her turn to go through the Santa Fund distribution operation at the Radisson Hotel on Dec. 18.
The plan for Christmas is to open presents at home, then head over to her mother’s.
“She does the breakfast, the stockings and the little extra stuff, which is good. Her house is way more decorated than mine,” Carrie said.
