PORTSMOUTH — A man in crisis who caused traffic to be rerouted for hours Tuesday morning surrendered to police at about 9:25 a.m.

The man was talked out of a residence on Dennett Street after four and a half hours of negotiation.

Sgt. Christopher Roth said officers were called to the home near Woodbury Avenue at 4:58 a.m. As of 9:15 a.m., police were still there, Roth said.

“We’re just trying to get him out at this point,” Roth said at the time.

Roth said police blocked traffic between Bartlett and Stark streets.

Police did not believe the public was in danger.

Firefighters, the Seacoast Emergency Response Team, State Police and the Rockingham County Sheriff’s Office responded, Roth said.
