Speed and impairment appear to be contributing factors to a fatal accident on Interstate 95 in Portsmouth Wednesday night, according to the state police.

All southbound lanes of I-95 near the area of Exit 7 were closed for two and a half hours following this crash that occurred at roughly 6:40 p.m.

Courtney Hickson, 36, of Chelsea, Mass., was a passenger in the 2012 Honda Civic that Daniel Powers, 36, of Boston was driving.

State police said Powers tried to change lanes in front of a full-sized, 2017 Freightliner tractor trailer when he lost control of the car.

This led to the tractor trailer striking the car in the passenger side.

Hickson was taken to Portsmouth Regional Hospital where she was pronounced dead as a result of the crash.

Powers was taken to the same hospital and got treatment for life-threatening injuries.

State police did not identify the driver of the tractor-trailer.

Troopers said while speed and impairment were factors they continue to investigate all aspects of the crash.

Anyone with information about the crash is urged to call Trooper Jonathan Minnich at 223-8490.

The Portsmouth Police Department, the Portsmouth Fire Department, and the Rye Police Department all assisted state police in responding to the crash.
