Officials: Fatal fire in Salem started in victim's apartment

February 12. 2018 9:45PM

SALEM — A fire that claimed the life of an apartment resident started in that man’s apartment, authorities said Monday.

The Saturday night fire originated in Unit 8 on the second floor of the Salem Crossing Apartments on Cluff Crossing Road.

“That is where the victim resided,” said Salem Fire Marshal Jeff Emanuelson.

The man’s identity was not released, pending an autopsy and notification of relatives, Emanuelson said. The man was pronounced dead at a hospital in Methuen, Mass.

Emanuelson said the fire’s cause doesn’t appear suspicious, but “we’re waiting to finish up our interview with witnesses.”

The building’s management is working to get utilities restored to the building, so some residents with apartments less affected can return, Emanuelson said.

Five people also were injured in the fire.

A family of four was checked out for precautionary reasons.

“They’re doing fine,” Emanuelson said.

A woman who jumped from a third-floor window sustained non life-threatening injuries.

The fire was reported just after 11 p.m. Saturday.
