Manchester Men's Hockey: Visiting Angels prevail, stay in first place

Visiting Angels retained first place in the Manchester Men’s Over-40 Hockey League with a 5-2 win over Atlas Precision Metal Fabricators. Mike Dunne, the league’s leading scorer with 20, paced the Angels with a pair of goals and an assist. Kevin Ahern, Butch Greenwood and Steve Chabot also scored for the winners.
Atlas got goals from team captain Steve Meisel and Jim Bartels. Rocky Desrosiers had 26 saves for Visiting Angels; Scott Greer had 24 for Atlas.
In the night’s second game, Luigi’s Pizza and Phaneuf Funeral Homes battled to a 6-6 tie. Eric Grant, tied with Dunne as the league’s leading goal scorer, had three goals for Luigi’s. Kelly Morgan, Ken Proulx and Daren Blais also scored. Lance Laverriere and Roger Lajeunesse each had two assists.
The Phaneuf sextet got two goals each from Steve Smith, Danny Leblanc and team sponsor Buddy Phaneuf. Team captain Mark Stearns chipped in with a pair of assists. Jon Komarek had 26 saves for Luigi’s; Mark Sloan had 25 for Phaneuf.
Games of Feb. 3
Propelled by hat tricks by John Cail and Gene Webber, LeClerc State Farm Insurance blasted by Atlas Precision Metal Fabricators 11-1. Rounding out the scoring for the winners were team captain Marc Morin, Tom Defina and Danny Leblanc, who tallied twice. Lance Laverriere contributed four assists.
Rich Verrier had the lone goal for Atlas. Mark Crowley needed 21 saves to earn the win. Scott Greer of Atlas faced 38 shots.
In the night’s other game, Visiting Angels beat Phaneuf Funeral Homes 8-5. Visiting Angels got goals from Kevin Ahern, Butch Greenwood, Roy Hull, Dave Robidoux, Mike Dunne, Mike Mailloux and Dan LaBerge, who scored twice. Steve Yabroudy added two assists. Rocky Desrosiers got the win for Visiting Angels as he made 25 saves. Steve Smith led the Phaneuf offense with two goals and an assist. Their other goals came from team sponsor Buddy Phaneuf, Rick Crocker and Steve DesRuisseaux. Glen Boisvert had two assists and Mark Sloan had 33 saves.
Games of Jan. 26
Visiting Angels beat Luigi’s Pizza 5-2. The winners went ahead 3-0 halfway through the first period via two goals from Dave Robidoux and one from Kevin Ahern. Dan LaBerge chipped in with two assists.
Eric Grant scored for Luigi’s in the second period and John Fraitzl in the third to close within one but that was as close as Luigi’s could get. With Luigi’s goalie pulled for an extra skater, Visiting Angels scored two empty net goals from Mike Dunne and Mark Crowley to seal the win.
Rocky Desrosiers had 25 saves for the Angels while Shane Burgess had a fine game, turning aside 37 shots.
The second game saw several lead changes before Lance Laverriere’s second goal of the game, with their goalie pulled and 28.9 seconds left, helped LeClerc State Farm Insurance to forge a 4-4 tie with Phaneuf Funeral Homes. Tom Defina and Gene Webber also scored for LeClerc. Dave Villeneuve had two assists.
Phanuef got goals from Jim Figueira, Danny Leblanc, Norm Roy and Al Chouinard. Dave Anstey had 18 saves for LeClerc, who peppered Phaneuf’s Mark Sloan with 46 shots.
