Tasting Notes with Jim Beauregard: More Spectacular choices: Three Cabs and a Rosť

Chateau St. Pierre 2016 Rose from Provence, France 

We’ve spent the past couple of weeks at the convention center on Elm Street (metaphorically, of course), talking about some of the excellent wines that were offered at the Easterseals Winter Wine Spectacular last month.

Here we go again, with our third and final installment:

Robert Young Scion Estate Cabernet Sauvignon, 2012; California. 14.8% alcohol by volume. $65. This is a wine that I have had multiple times before. It’s a higher end Cabernet Sauvignon and worth every penny you might pay for it. It is a deep purple in the glass, with a nose of rich and pronounced black fruit. The palate is very dry, with medium to medium-plus alcohol that is remarkably well integrated. The wine is medium-plus bodied with steady and pleasing flavor intensity of classic blackcurrant — which, when done well in a Cabernet Sauvignon like this one, is spectacular — along with blackberry and some rich and remarkably well integrated oak flavors. This one is a keeper. They had always been on the shelves of New Hampshire wine shops.

Angels Landing Cabernet Sauvignon, 2013, Napa, Calif. 15% ABV. $20. Classic deep purple in the glass, dry on the palate with medium acidity and tannin. This is a rich black fruit and blackcurrant Cabernet, as was the one above, with medium body and medium-plus flavor intensity, both primary and secondary flavor characteristics, the latter being taken from the oak in which it is aged. It has a long and pleasing finish and is ready to drink now.

Let’s move for a moment to the lighter end of the spectrum:

Château St. Pierre Rosé, 201;, Provence, France. 12.5% ABV. $15. Rosé has a color spectrum of its own and can run from pink to salmon, to a deeper orange, or onion skin kind of colors. This is a pink rose from the south of France, which is justly famous for its delicious and dry rosés. And it is indeed a dry wine with medium acidity, medium alcohol and rich red fruit flavors where strawberry and red plum predominate. Another one to seek out if you’ve become tired of winter, guaranteed to bring you a rush of images from the south of France.

Casaeda Cabernet Sauvignon, 2013, Napa, California. 14% ABV. $30. I did tend toward Cabs at this tasting, didn’t I ? This one is purple, with a clean nose with pronounced intensity. Blackcurrant, that classic cab flavor, comes through immediately. It is a dry wine, with medium acidity and medium-plus, tooth-coating tannin, well-integrated alcohol at 14%, and a rich and steady palate of blackcurrant fruit right through to the end.

With that, we shall bring this year’s Easterseals tasting to an end, but do be aware that there were hundreds of wonderful wines on display that night, and they are available right here in New Hampshire.
