NHIAA Roundup: Unbeaten Portsmouth tops No. 2 Pelham

A strong second half helped the Portsmouth High School girls’ basketball team defeat Pelham 37-30 on the road Wednesday night in a battle between the two teams that began the night at the top of the Division II standings.

Portsmouth, which will enter the Division II tournament with an 18-0 record, trailed 15-13 at halftime, but outscored Pelham 24-15 in the final two quarters. The loss dropped Pelham’s record to 15-2.

Pelham’s Danielle Sirois led all scorers with 12 points. Sadie Shore (11), Abbe Laurence (nine) and Corinne Lamond (nine) were Portsmouth’s leading scorers.

Girls’ basketball

Bow 48, Kingswood 30: In Wolfeboro, Lauren Goyette’s 17-point performance helped carry Bow (9-7) to victory. The Falcons received 10 points from Patty Nordin and eight from Erin Boldwin. Amanda Lapar tossed in 10 for Kingswood (4-13). Eliza Brault added nine for the Knights.

Boys’ hockey

Pinkerton 4, Bishop Guertin 1: At the Ice Den in Hooksett. seniors Ty Riviere, Cody Sullivan and Patrick Hare scored first-period goals, leading Pinkerton on Wednesday night Landon McClure added a breakaway goal in the third period, set up nicely by Robert Flinton, helping the Astros improve to 14-3 in Division I.

Ben Peterson scored BG’s goal with 3:25 remaining. The Cardinals dropped to 12-7-1.

Belmont/Gilford 6, Laconia/Winnisquam 2: In Laconia, Regan Sedlar, Steve Licata, Matt Warrington, Domninic Carozza, Hunter Burke and Zach Richard scored the Belmont/Gilford (10-6-1) goals. Zach Stimeling collected two assists and Greg Amato made 16 saves.

Miles Defosses scored twice for Laconia/Winnisquam (0-15-0), which received a 62-save performance from Colin McGreevy.

Keene 8, Goffstown 2: In Keene, the Blackbirds broke open a tight game by scoring five goals in the third period. Joe Walsh scored three goals and Benny Brown scored twice for Keene (13-1-1). Connor Murphy, Tim Greenwood and Owen Haas also scored for the Blackbirds. The loss dropped Goffstown to 14-3-0 in Division II.

Kennett 9, Pembroke/Campbell 1: In Conway, senior Caleb McPherson scored five goals (four in the opening period) and assisted on two others for the Eagles (16-1-0 in Division II). McPherson collected the 100th point of his varsity career in the win.

St. Thomas 9, Portsmouth/Newmarket 2: In Dover, Patrick Vetter scored four goals and Mike Somerset finished with two to lead the Saints (14-3 in Division II). Portsmouth/Newmarket (5-12) allowed four third-period goals.
