NASHUA - He may not have needed it, but Timberlane Regional High School's Barret Kappler had some added motivation entering the championship match at the 120-pound weight class in Saturday's Meet of Champions.
Windham High School's Riley Millette, Kappler's opponent in the 120-pound final, pinned Kappler during the Lowell Holiday Wrestling Tournament in December. Kappler got his revenge Saturday by winning the 120-pound championship with a 15-4 victory at Nashua South High School.
Kappler, who entered the tournament with a 32-5 record, won last year's NHIAA championship at 106 pounds, but was scratched from the New England Championships when he failed to make weight. The top three finishers in each weight class at the Meet of Champions earned the right to compete in the New Englands, which will be held next weekend in Providence, R.I.
"I'm going to have fun ... see what kind of damage I can do," Kappler said. "I don't have any projections, but obviously I'm going for gold. Why would you go without trying to win? I think I can place."
Timberlane's depth was again on display Saturday, as the Owls earned 235.5 points and won the team competition for the 15th consecutive year. Salem (2003) was the last team to prevail at the Meet of Champions other than Timberlane.
Concord finished second with 132.5 points; Pinkerton Academy was third with 116.5; Salem finished fourth with 107 and Bishop Guertin was fifth with 103.
Perhaps no wrestler has turned in a more impressive season than Exeter junior Hayden Brown, who was a bit of an unknown in parts of the NHIAA wrestling community before the 2017-18 season began. Brown, who wrestled for Phillips Exeter Academy last season, added to an already impressive resume by beating Goffstown's Jac St. Jean, 15-4, to win the 126-pound state championship.
"It was my only match this year that wasn't a (technical fall) or a pin," Brown said. "It was my closest match, but it was still satisfying."
Brown won the New England title and finished fifth in the nationals at 113-pounds as a sophomore, and won the New England title at 106 pounds as a freshman.
Timberlane produced two other state champions: Connor McGonagle and Justin Berube. McGonagle pinned Windham's Vincent Marino at 132 pounds; and Berube beat Bishop Guertin's Dan Franco 5-4 in the 152-pound final.
Kappler, McGonagle and Berube each won a Division I championship last weekend. McGonagle, who brought a 40-1 record into the Meet of Champions, won the New England title at 126 pounds last year.
This year's other state champions: Concord's Sam Wagner defeated Timbelane's Nick Roeger 10-1 at 106 pounds; Salem's Matt Adams beat White Mountains' Jonathon Austin 6-2 at 113; Bedford's A.J. Pagliarulo beat Kingswood's Brian Lindsay 7-1 at 138; Oyster River's Noah Strout defeated Timberlane's Dylan Musgrave 4-2 at 145; Salem's Tristen Cabinta won his third straight state title with a 6-2 triumph over Alvirne's Kyle Gora at 160 pounds; ConVal's Dan Curran pinned Concord's Isaac Gadey at 170 pounds; Pinkerton's Sterling McLaughlin pinned Timberlane's Dylan Tremblay at 182; Salem's Beau Dillon defeated Plymouth's Troy Johnson 5-4 at 195; Concord's Alex Buteau beat Pinkerton's Robert Fahey 3-2 at 220; and Bedford's Chris Francis pinned Mascoma's Tyler Bill at 285.
Eighteen Division I wrestlers, six Division II wrestlers and four Division III wrestlers reached the finals. Sixteen schools were represented by the 28 wrestlers who advanced to the final match in their weight class.
Timberlane had six wrestlers reach the championship match in their weight class. Concord and Salem each had three.
