Laconia woman pleads guilty in grandmother’s neglect

LACONIA - A city woman was sentenced to a year in county jail and two years of probation Tuesday after pleading guilty in Belknap County Superior Court to a felony charge of criminal neglect of an elder adult.

According to a release from Attorney General Gordon J. MacDonald, Rachel Newton, 25, neglected her 88-year-old grandmother in March 2016. Newton was responsible for helping her grandmother with eating, taking medication, personal hygiene and other care, according to the release. Her neglect cause a stage four ulcer on the elderly woman's sacrum, the release said.

In sentencing Newton Tuesday the court recommended she participate in the Community Opportunity for Recovery and Education program, the release said.
