CHICHESTER — A section of Route 4 was shut down Wednesday afternoon after a three-vehicle accident occurred, killing one motorist, according to police officials.

Traffic had to be detoured off the main thoroughfare onto Bailey Road in Chichester for several hours

Chichester police and fire first responded around 3 p.m. to the intersection of Route 4 and Mason Road near the Healthy Buffalo butcher shop.

Officials said the crash occurred when the driver of a black Toyota sedan struck the rear of another car.

The motorist who caused the crash then lost control and veered across the yellow line and was struck by the driver of a Crystal Springs Water delivery truck.

According to first responders, the driver of the sedan who caused the crash died at the scene while the other motorists received non-serious injuries from the accident.

State environmental officials were on the scene because the crash ruptured the gas tank of the delivery truck causing about 100 gallons of fuel to spill off the roadway.

The accident remains under investigation, officials said.
