NASHUA — Renovations are now underway at Amazon’s local fulfillment center to better accommodate an expected increase in truck traffic.
“We are essentially paving this site, I am not going to sugarcoat it,” Jim Petropulos, a civil engineer with Hayner Swanson Inc., told the planning board last week.
The warehouse building at 10 State St. has been vacant for about eight months, but is expected to reopen by July 1, according to Petropulos, who said Amazon Logistics needs about 232 parking spaces at the site.
Last week, the planning board approved the construction of two new parking lots on the 4.5 acre property, including a paved parking lot with 52 spaces in the northwest corner of the lot, and a second paved parking lot in the southeast corner with 68 spots.
“Amazon intends to use this building to provide the last mile of the customer delivery phase for the Greater Nashua area,” he said, explaining packages will be delivered to the Nashua site from larger warehouse facilities throughout New England.
Although there are currently 17 loading dock doors along the warehouse site, only four will be utilized, Petropulos said.
Seventy employees will be stationed at the 64,000-square-feet facility, and about seven trucks will be delivering packages to the warehouse on a daily basis, he said. Most of the activity will be taking place overnight, from 10 p.m. to 9 a.m.
About 100 Amazon drivers will be utilizing the warehouse, and each of them will have their own company van, according to Petropulos, who said the drivers will be picking up their deliveries in staggered rotations from 6 a.m. to 9 a.m. daily.
“It seems like a lot — like much more than we usually consider,” Gerry Reppucci, planning board member, said of the 232 parking spaces.
He questioned why the company would need so many parking stalls if people will be coming and going throughout the daily operations.
Petropolis said Amazon has a long-term lease for the property that is owned by 1987 Tamposi Limited Partnership, explaining there must be room for the company vans and the personal cars owned by the estimated 100 drivers.
State Street is located off Amherst Street, across from Nashua Community College. “This site will not be seen by Amherst Street,” he stressed, explaining the warehouse is located in the middle of a commercial park.
In addition, Amazon intends on using porous pavement to help mitigate stormwater issues on the property. Overall, 22,000 feet of new pavement will be constructed.
“I think it is the best solution for that area,” said Petropulos.
The Amazon site in Nashua, which opened in 2007, employs workers from the local community throughout the year, but also hires additional seasonal workers based on demand.
