CHATHAM — A 62-year-old man was killed Wednesday afternoon when his all-terrain vehicle left the road and hit a tree.

Fish and Game officials said Roger Johnson of South Chatham was pronounced dead at the scene of the crash on Deer Hill Road.

“Johnson was travelling along the roadway following another ATV when he left the roadway and struck a large tree,” Fish and Game said in a news release. “Johnson was not wearing a helmet at the time of the crash.”

Chatham is on the New Hampshire-Maine border. Saco Valley Fire Department, Fryeburg Rescue and the Oxford County Sheriff's Office as well as Carroll County Sheriff's Office and New Hampshire Fish and Game conservation officers responded to the crash just after 2 p.m.

The cause of the crash and any contributing factors remain under investigation, officials said.
