Car shows a driving force in NH

You might hear them coming with the glug-glug-glug of their engines at idle, or you might see their flash and dash as they zing by, these creatures of the road.

The classic, hot rod, custom or antique can turn heads because of a nostalgic whim, a long-ago memory or simply a love for the smooth curves, sharp lines, flecked paint and mirrored wheels.

The automobile has its enthusiasts, and like any other pastime, its collectors — folks who join car clubs and share their restored or original beauties with an admiring public.

The warm weather draws these gems out of their garages, and they arrive like butterflies to a garden. During the summer you are likely to bump into a car show almost any night of the week at Cruise Nights. And there are scores of special events planned. Here’s a sneak peek:

20th Antique and Collectible Motor Vehicle Show, 9 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. Saturday, Mount Sunapee Resort, Route 103, Newbury. There will be cars, hot rods and rat rods, and motorcycles. There will be trophies for each class. Food, fun and free chair rides to the top of Mt. Sunapee are included in price, which is $5 (free for children younger than 12). Info:

Antique and Classic Automobile Event, 10 a.m. to 3p.m., Saturday, July 7, Meadows by Shannon Pond at Castle in the Clouds, Ossipee Park Road, Moultonborough. View stunning examples of antique cars dating from the turn of the 20th century in an equally stunning setting. People’s Choice awards will be given. Food and beverages will be available for purchase. There is a $5 spectator fee per person. Info:

Color Works Classic Car Show on the Common in Gorham, Saturday, July 1. Part of the Fourth of July festivities in Gorham, the car show runs from noon to 2 p.m. and will be preceded by the car parade at 11:30 a.m. Awards will be handed out.

Fourth annual Car Show at the Aviation Museum, 27 Navigator Road, Londonderry, from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturday, July 14. There will be a raffle, food and trophies. Info:

The 22nd annual British Cars of NH Show of Dreams from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. Saturday, July 28, at Alvirne Hills House Field, Hudson. British cars on view will include the Austin Martin, MG, Sprite, Jaguar, Midget and Spitfire. Info:

Antique and Classic Car Show at 305 Whittemore Point Road North near Newfound Lake in Bridgewater from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturday, Aug. 4. There will be food, music, demonstrations and more. Rain date is Sunday, Aug. 5.

The 44th annual Show and Shine at Anheuser Busch Brewery, 221 D.W. Highway, Merrimack, from 7 a.m. to 3 p.m. Sunday, Aug. 5. Come see hundreds of vehicles, and the famous Clydesdales. Free brewery tour will be offered. All special-interest vehicles are welcome. Suggested admission fee: $5.

The seventh annual Claremont Senior Center Car Show from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. Sunday, Aug. 26, 135 Maple Ave., Claremont. Admission is $5 for adults and free for children under 12.

The 31st Concord Kiwanis Antique and Classic Car Show, 8 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. Monday, Sept. 10, at NHTI — Concord’s Community College on Institute Drive. There also will be live music, food and ice cream. Admission is $5 for spectators. There is no fee for children.

The Mustang Car Club of New England presents the Granite State Mustang Grand National from Friday, Aug. 31 through Sunday, Sept. 2 at Anheuser Busch Brewery, 221 Daniel Webster Highway, Merrimack. There will be a boat cruise Thursday, Aug. 30, around Portsmouth. Saturday night there will be a pasta-station dinner and a casino night to benefit The Shriners Hospital. Visitors can take a brewery tour with a tasting, and don’t forget to check out the Clydesdale’s resident quarters.

Cruising Downtown, one of the largest car shows in the state, takes over Manchester’s Elm Street from 7 a.m. to 5 p.m. Saturday, Sept. 1. This one draws more than 800 classic, hot rod, antique, custom and classic cars, trucks and motorcycles . In 2015 they even welcomed and featured special guest, Dennis Gage, the host of the television show “My Classic Car.” Info:

The 21st annual Woodman Museum Vintage Car and Motorcycle Show from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. Sunday, Sept. 9, at the Woodman Museum, 182 Central Ave., Dover. The show features class and antique automobiles, including military vehicles and motorcycles. Admission is $10 for adults and $5 for children. Rain date is Sunday, Sept. 16.

Wheels & Wings from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturday, Sept. 15 at Nashua Airport, 93 Perimeter Road. Explore big trucks and planes and find out how they work. Entertainment at the family-friendly event will include bounce houses and magic shows.
