World Cup: Croatia hammers Argentina

Croatia delivered a dominating performance to post a 3-0 win over Argentina on Thursday at Nizhny Novgorod, Russia, to reach the World Cup’s round of 16 for the first time since 1998.

Ante Rebic, Luka Modric and Ivan Rakitic each scored goals as Croatia (2-0-0) controlled the Group D match.

Rebic scored in the 53rd minute to break a scoreless tie when he placed a right-footed shot into the upper center of the net after Argentina goalkeeper Willy Caballero miskicked the ball directly into Rebic’s path. Modric made it 2-0 with his goal in the 80th minute before Rakitic added a goal during the first minute of stoppage time.

France 1, Peru 0

Kylian Mbappe scored in the 34th minute to lift France past Peru in Group C play at Yekaterinburg, Russia. The win allows France (2-0-0) to advance to the round of 16. Peru (0-2-0) was eliminated from advancing.

Australia 1, Denmark 1

Australia rallied for a draw with Denmark (1-0-1) when Mile Jedinak scored on a penalty following a video review in Group C play at Samara.

Jedinak evened the score from 12 yards out for the Socceroos (0-1-1). in the 38th minute. Tottenham’s Christian Eriksen put Denmark up 1-0 seven minutes into the action, taking a pass from Nicolai Jorgensen just inside the penalty area.

Yussuf Poulsen was called for an intentional handball after a video assisted review by Spanish referee Antonio Mateu Lohaz.

Jedinak went low, sneaking the ball past Kasper Schmeichel.
