GILMANTON — A Bay State man has been identified as the victim of Wednesday’s fatal motor vehicle crash on Route 106.

Gilmanton Police Chief Matt Currier said Andrew Smith, 63, of Attleboro, Mass., was pronounced dead at the scene of the accident that happened in the area of 235 Route 106 shortly before 3:54 p.m.

When police arrived they found Smith’s 1985 GMC pickup truck in the southbound breakdown lane. Also in the southbound breakdown lane was a 2002 Chevy Silverado pickup truck, which had been driven by Leon Ellsworth, 63, of Gilmanton.

Ellsworth and a passenger in Smith’s truck were taken by ambulance to Concord Hospital for evaluation.

The Belknap County Regional Accident Reconstruction Team was called in to assist in investigating the circumstances surrounding the crash. Currier said the investigation is ongoing at this time.

A section of Route 106 was closed for some three hours while the reconstruction team took measurements.

Southbound traffic heading toward Loudon was rerouted onto Waring Road, then onto South Road that reconnects with Route 106. Northbound traffic was detoured onto Allens Mills Road.

Members of the Gilmanton and Belmont fire departments were assisted at the scene by officers from Laconia, Gilford, Belmont, Loudon and the Belknap County Sheriff’s Department.
