The New Hampshire Fisher Cats lost a lead in the top of the ninth, then nearly tied it in the bottom of the inning. When the smoke cleared, the Reading Fightin Phils had an 8-7 Eastern League victory on Saturday night before 5,692 fans at Northeast Delta Dental Stadium.
Reading has now taken the first four games of a five-game series and can earn a sweep with a victory today at 1:35 p.m., the last contest before the league’s all-star break.
New Hampshire trailed 8-6 entering the bottom of the ninth. With one out, Jonathan Davis walked, and after Bo Bichette was called out on strikes, Harold Ramirez singled and Davis scooted to third.
Cavan Biggio then doubled to right field, scoring Davis. But right fielder Austin Listi collected the ball and hit cutoff man Darick Hall, the first baseman, who threw to catcher Deivi Grullon to nail Ramirez trying to score the tying run.
A half-inning earlier, Hall played the hero, drilling a three-run homer off reliever Andrew Case (1-3) to cap a four-run rally.
Biggio and Davis had solo homers in New Hampshire’s 10-hit attack.
