NASHUA — School principals and police officers in Nashua may be receiving salary increases if two newly proposed bargaining agreements are approved by aldermen.
This week, proposed union contracts with the Nashua Police Patrolman’s Association and the Nashua Association of School Principals were introduced to the Board of Aldermen. Each contract will be reviewed by an aldermanic committee before the full board votes on the agreements.
The Nashua Police Patrolman’s Association — one of five police unions in the city — has 137 members and is seeking a 10 percent wage increase spread over four years, according to the contract being recommended by the union and the Nashua Police Commission.
The proposed contract runs from July 1, 2018 to June 30, 2022. According to the proposal, patrol officers would receive a 2-percent pay hike this year, a 3-percent increase the following year and 2.5-percent increases in fiscal years 2021 and 2022.
Currently, the combined base pay for the union members is about $9.9 million. If the new bargaining agreement is adopted, that amount would increase to nearly $10.9 million.
Also included in the contract is a clause that allows officers to “request a review of (old) disciplinary documentation in their personnel file,” to purge letters of warnings and remedial training or counseling forms after five years, and to purge letters of suspensions after seven years.
In addition, the proposed contract would allow officers with 20 years of continuous service to use 30 vacation days per year.
The last time aldermen adopted a new contract for city police officers was in 2014, a seven-year contract which ran retroactively from 2011 to 2018 and required a payback of retroactive healthcare premiums.
The former contract provided a 15-percent wage increase spread over the life of the contract, costing the city about $6.5 million.
A new, separate bargaining agreement with the Nashua Association of School Principals is also on the table and being recommended by the Nashua Board of Education.
That union, which includes 40 principals and administrators, is also proposing a four-year contract that would run from July 1, 2018 and end June 30, 2022. The members are seeking a more than 7-percent wage increase over the course of the contract.
According to the proposal, principals would receive a 2.1-percent pay hike this year, a 2-percent increase for 2020 and 2021 of the following years and a 1.2-percent increase during the final fiscal year 2022.
Currently, the combined base pay for union members is nearly $3.6 million. If the new bargaining agreement is adopted, that amount would increase to $3,841,250.
