Patriarch to visit Our Lady of the Cedars today

July 11. 2018 9:41PM

MANCHESTER — Our Lady of the Cedars Melkite Catholic Church will receive a historic visit today from its Patriarch.

His Beatitude Patriarch Joseph Absi, Patriarch of Antioch and All the East, lives in Damascus, Syria, and is the spiritual leader of 1.5 million Melkite Catholics worldwide.

The Melkite Church is in full communion with the Roman Catholic Church but follows the ancient liturgical and spiritual traditions of the Byzantine East.

According to a news release, its identity as a “Greek Catholic Church” is not connected with the ethnic background of members, but is a description of the church’s traditions and worship.

“The Melkite Church is part of the Apostolic Church of Antioch, first founded by St. Peter himself, and now spread throughout the world,” the news release states.

Patriarch Joseph will preside at a celebration of Great Vespers at 6 p.m. at the church at 140 Mitchell St.

The public is welcome to attend and to greet the visiting Patriarch.
