PELHAM — Police arrested two men on drunken- and drugged-driving charges Thursday in Pelham, including a Nashua man officials say crashed his vehicle while overdosing behind the wheel.

Police said around 4:27 p.m a man identified as Karl Saunders, 35, of Nashua, was traveling northbound on Bridge Street when he drove over the double yellow line and across the grass of the Willow Street Plaza. His vehicle continued up an embankment, causing it to go airborne, before eventually landing in the middle of the intersection.

Police said Saunders was found unconscious and barely breathing behind the wheel of the car. While emergency personnel were responding to the scene, Saunders stopped breathing. Officers along with a witness to the crash began CPR in the middle of the intersection. Pelham Fire arrived and rendered medical treatment to Saunders and he regained consciousness.

Saunders was placed under arrest for driving under the influence of drugs. He was transported to Southern New Hampshire Medical Hospital for treatment, and remained in police custody Thursday night.

Police say once Saunders is released from the hospital he will be transported back to the Pelham Police Department and processed on the following charges; driving under the influence of drugs, possession of drugs and transportation of drugs in a motor vehicle.

Earlier in the day, police investigating a report of a car all over the road shooting sparks from its wheel on Bridge Street shortly after midnight arrested a Pelham man after officers saw him driving without a front passenger tire and with a broken headlight, according to a news release.

Police pulled over the 2009 Dodge Avenger near Willow Street, where they said they determined driver Michael Medeiros, 36, was impaired. Medeiros resisted arrest, police said, and was brought down and handcuffed after a brief struggle, suffering minor cuts and scrapes.

Medeiros was charged with driving while intoxicated, resisting arrest, an open container violation and operating with defective equipment, police said. He made bail, police said, but was released to the Valley Street jail in Manchester when he was unable to find a sober adult to take responsibility for him.

He is scheduled to appear in Salem circuit court Aug. 13.
