MANCHESTER — Police who stopped two men seen crouching in a mulch bed outside the Maple Leaf Health Care Center early Friday ended up arresting one of them in the theft of two bicycles from an Ash Street garage.

An officer saw the men about 1:15 a.m. and when he turned his car around to investigate, one of them hopped on a bicycle and rode away, according to a news release.

Police stopped and questioned Albert Gaudreau, 27, of Everett, Mass., on Beech Street near Pearl Street, the news release said. Police said they determined Jeffrey Beaulieu, 41, no fixed address, had taken the bicycles out of the Ash Street residential garage moments before.

Beaulieu was found hiding in bushes outside 138/144 Ash St., but he ran away before being stopped by another officer and his K-9 partner, police said.

Beaulieu was arrested and charged with unauthorized taking, criminal trespass, resisting arrest and an electronic bench warrant, police said. He was scheduled to appear in Manchester circuit court later Friday. Gaudreau was not charged.

The bicycles — Schwinn and GT mountain bikes with a combined value of $700, were recovered from the lawn of the health care center, police said.
