A Supreme Court for the people

August 10. 2018 2:37PM

To the Editor: There are currently hundreds of active court cases challenging the legality of the Trump Administration's dismantling of regulatory protections for clean and clean water. Many of these cases may ultimately end up with the Supreme Court.

The courts are meant to level the playing field where a local community group can stand up to a powerful oil company that poisons its waterways. It is the great equalizer in a democracy, a vital check against unbridled power.

The threats to people's health go well beyond our environmental laws. Weakening of laws that protect workers' ability to organize, civil rights, and consumer protections also threaten people's health and well being. We need a Justice who will not be a rubber stamp for the administration, and ultimately corporate polluters, but a justice who will uphold the rule of law.
