Don't abandon the Catholic Church

August 28. 2018 10:53PM

To the Editor: Once again, the Catholic Church is under attack over the sins of the clergy.

Is this a test of the people’s faith? Indeed it is! Each practicing Catholic now has to decide what their individual response is in the parish where they attend Mass.

Should I drop out and attend Mass no more? This is a decision that will affect them directly and the other Catholics who are struggling to endure in the practice of their faith. How will I be affected when I am no longer receiving Jesus Christ in the Eucharist; Jesus has already told us, “unless you eat of the flesh of the Son of God and drink His blood, you have no life in you.”

One person’s absence at the Mass will have a far-reaching effect on the others who are attending. Each parish has a hard-working staff that strives to offer programs that deepen the faith of all the family members. Individuals who are betraying the trust of the young and vulnerable are few when compared with the numbers who attend church faithfully and endeavor to live out their Christian faith.

Let’s not turn the outrageous behavior of those we’ve trusted with authority into a reason to abandon an institution that, through the power of the Holy Spirit, has produced so many Saints worthy of following. Generations of Catholics have endured this kind of betrayal and persecution before and have come through it with deeper faith and stronger convictions. Let’s follow in their footsteps.
