LONDONDERRY - U.S. Navy Ensign Alex Hartnett, a surface warfare officer, will soon report to the guided-missile destroyer USS Thomas Hudner in Mayport, Fla., to serve as the ship's main propulsion officer.

Hartnett, a Londonderry native, completed a Junior Officer of the Deck course last month at Surface Warfare Officers School in Newport, R.I.

Graduation from the four-week course, which immerses young officers in ship-handling simulators, is becoming a new requirement for surface warfare officers before they report to their initial assignments in the fleet.

Hartnett, the son of Richard and Gail Hartnett of Londonderry, is a 2008 graduate of Londonderry High School who has a bachelor's degree in criminal justice from University of Massachusetts Lowell. He was commissioned through Officer Candidate School.

"I served five years enlisted in the Army and had the opportunity to attend OCS through the Navy," Hartnett said. "I wanted to continue to serve our country and continue my adventure."
