A section of Parrott Avenue was shut down Tuesday afternoon after someone called in a bomb threat to Portsmouth Circuit Court.

According to Police Chief Robert Merner, emergency crews responded to the scene at 2:27 p.m. Officers immediately evacuated the courthouse and worked with managers at Citizens Bank next door to make sure that building was cleared.

Merner said another building in the area also was evacuated. Officers helped expedite the dismissal of classes at the nearby middle school.

“We just never know. You never take any of these things lightly in this day and age,” Merner said.

State police used K-9 units to sweep the area outside and inside the courthouse before the scene was cleared just after 4 p.m.
