Robert Bowman, 34, was charged with two counts of burglary after turning himself in to police Friday.
Dover police say clergy first discovered money and gift cards missing on June 3 from an area restricted to the public. Then, on Sept. 2, a priest interrupted Bowman during an alleged burglary.
“One of the priests came back into a living quarters and found Bowman inside and confronted him,” Sgt. Mark Nadeau said.
Bowman fled before police arrived.
Nadeau said Bowman was not a church employee, but may have been familiar with the church's layout from attending public events.
“There is no reason to believe he was allowed in these restricted areas,” the sergeant said.
After an arrest warrant was issued for him, Bowman turned himself in at Dover Police Department and was released on personal recognizance bond. He is scheduled to be arraigned Sept. 20 in Strafford County Superior Court.
St. Joseph's Church is located at 150 Central Ave. in downtown Dover.
