Comcast connects with its first Rochester customers

ROCHESTER — Comcast has connected residential customers to service in Rochester, creating the first competitive cable market in New Hampshire.

The city is also served by Atlantic Broadband, which acquired MetroCast Cable Systems for $1.4 billion in January.

Last week, Comcast announced that dozens of homes at The Village at Clark Brook were the first in Rochester to be connected. Other homes and businesses will be activated later this year and in 2019.

“We are delighted to be responding to consumers and businesses who have long expressed their desire for Xfinity and Comcast Business products and services,” Senior Vice President for Comcast’s Greater Boston Region Tracy Pitcher said in a statement.

Rochester residents can monitor the progress to find out when services will be available on their street at www.welcome2xfinity.com.

Comcast’s platform for video service includes the X1 voice remote that can be used to access television programming and use Netflix, YouTube, Pandora, iHeartRadio and NPR One.

Amazon Prime Video will soon be part of the lineup, Comcast spokesman Marc Goodman said Monday.

With this expansion, Comcast will be available in 104 communities in New Hampshire.

The company employs more than 2,000 people in local call centers, Xfinity Stores and technical operations centers serving residential customers and businesses. A new Xfinity Store has just opened in Dover at the Shaw’s shopping plaza on Central Avenue.

In December, the Rochester City Council approved a 10-year cable franchise agreement with Comcast, giving Rochester residents more options for television, internet, voice, home automation and wireless services.

“We appreciate Comcast’s investment to bring its innovative products and services to Rochester residents and businesses,” City Manager Blaine Cox said last week. “I know Rochester consumers and business owners welcome the opportunity to have a new choice when it comes to their communications and entertainment services provider, and we look forward to having them as part of our community.”

Goodman said there are no plans at this point in time to compete in any other New Hampshire town or city.
