Memories of McCain

September 11. 2018 10:33PM

To the Editor: During the presidential campaign in 2000, my husband, Bill, was chair of the Grafton County Republican Party. We hosted a breakfast for Sen. John McCain in Franconia and a cocktail party for Mrs. McCain and Mrs. Bush at the Hop in Hanover.

I am still impressed with how genuine and kind all three of them were. My best memory is at the breakfast as I listened to McCain’s self-deprecating chuckle as I cleaned the egg from his tie that had scraped through many plates as he reached across the tables to shake hands with the attendees. This was a serious politician and patriot who did not take himself too seriously. These were gentle people and boy, do we need more of them now!
