The New Hampshire Fisher Cats are a win away from the third Eastern League championship in team history.
New Hampshire took a two-game lead in the best-of-five Eastern League Championship Series with a 6-1 win over the Akron RubberDucks on Wednesday night at Canal Park in Akron, Ohio.
The series moves to Northeast Delta Dental Stadium in Manchester on Friday for Game 3. Games 4 and 5, if necessary, would be played Saturday and Sunday.
New Hampshire made its nine hits, all singles, count on Wednesday, scoring three times in the third inning to take a 3-1 lead. Jon Berti singled home Gunnar Heidt and Forrest Wall, and Berti scored on a Cavan Biggio RBI groundout.
The Fisher Cats added a run in the sixth when Harold Ramirez scored on a throwing error, and two runs in the eighth on an RBI single by Santiago Espinal, scoring Biggio, and a wild pitch to score Josh Palacios.
Starter Jon Harris pitched 6 1/3 strong innings, allowing five hits and one run, striking out seven. Jackson McClelland, Kirby Snead and Corey Copping combined for 2 2/3 innings of one-hit, scoreless relief.
Akron starter Kyle Dowdy took the loss, allowing four runs, three earned, in 5 1/3 innings. He gave up five hits, walked two and struck out eight. The RubberDucks used eight relievers in the loss.
The Fisher Cats won the Eastern League title in 2004 and 2011.
