BRENTWOOD - Chuck Massahos claimed victory in Tuesday's Republican primary in the race for Rockingham County sheriff, but he could face opposition from a Democratic write-in candidate in November.

The 59-year-old Salem man who has served 28 years as a deputy with the sheriff's office was the top vote-getter in the three-way race to replace Sheriff Michael Hureau.

Unofficial county results show Massahos received 9,563 votes, Barry Newcomb 8,954, and William Baldwin 4,526.

While there was no Democratic primary in the sheriff's race, Massahos said he's heard that a Democrat could launch a write-in campaign to give him some competition in the upcoming general election.

Massahos said he plans to take a break for a couple of weeks and then return to the campaign trail.

Massahos entered the race with the endorsement of Hureau and support from others within the sheriff's office.

He said he was encouraged to run in 2015 after the death of Michael Downing, who was serving as sheriff when he died.

“We wanted to make sure the office, after the passing of Sheriff Downing, that it continued in the same direction,” he said.

Massahos decided to help Hureau run a campaign to get elected by the county delegation as Downing's replacement.

With Hureau now retiring, Massahos agreed to throw his hat in the ring.

“I told them I would do it to keep the hard work that Sheriff Downing started and Sheriff Hureau has continued,” he said.

In addition to his role as a deputy sheriff, Massahos also served in the New Hampshire State Police Auxiliary Unit from 1994 to 1998 and is the owner of Londonderry BP, which specializes in automotive repair and service.

If elected, Massahos said he plans to enhance the Rockingham County Drug Task Force. He said it's important to work with addicts to help them recover and return to society while also making sure that the drug dealers are held accountable.
