NEWINGTON - A Maine man was killed when he lost control of his motorcycle while attempting a wheelie and crashed into the former Shogun Japanese Restaurant in Newington Wednesday night.

Robert J. Barish, 37, of Lebanon, Maine, had successfully completed one wheelie and put the front tire down in the restaurant's parking lot, but when he tried to stand the bike up again he lost control.

The 2003 Kawasaki ZX600 accelerated and Barish struck a wooden pillar and eventually crashed into a glass front door, according to Police Chief Michael Bilodeau.

Barish, who was wearing a helmet, was pronounced dead at the scene.

Bilodeau said they do not believe alcohol or drugs were factors in the crash. There were three witnesses who were interviewed, and the case remains under investigation.

The restaurant was closed last year. Bilodeau said they have not had complaints of any similar activity in the parking lot.

Anyone with further information can call police at 431-5461.
