BRENTWOOD — Deputy Fire Chief Joe Bird has been appointed officer in charge after Fire Chief Bill Campbell was arrested and charged with drunken driving in Fremont last week.

In a statement issued Wednesday, Town Administrator Karen Clement said Campbell asked to take a leave of absence effective on the morning of Oct. 6 following his “involvement in a motor vehicle accident.”

Clement said Campbell is on unpaid leave.

Campbell, 49, of 36 Susan’s Way in Fremont, was charged with driving under the influence Oct. 5 after his pickup truck crossed the center line on Route 107 in Fremont and struck another car before hitting a utility pole and coming to rest on its side in a garden.

Fremont police said he wasn’t hurt in the crash. The driver and passenger in the car received minor injuries.

Campbell was hired as Brentwood’s fire chief last year and is also a Nashua fire lieutenant. The city has placed him on paid leave while it conducts an internal investigation.
