The New Hampshire Film Industry is abuzz with the likes of Kristen Vermilyea on the scene. The former actress previously appeared in a few television commercials and on television shows such as "Law and Order" and "Third Watch," where she played the part of Nurse Ginny for four seasons. She also played some small parts in various indie films. But Vermilyea has been playing both sides of the fence, having worked in casting for film and television since 1986. She even lived in New York, where she studied improv at the Upright Citizen's Brigade. But her latest foray, as a producer, has brought her back to New Hampshire.

Vermilyea was born in Melrose, Massachusetts, but spent her formative years on her parent's farm in Pembroke, New Hampshire. This farm became the setting for her first feature film, Straight Forward, a 1940's film noir psychodrama that debuted at the Somewhat North of Boston (SNOB) Film Festival in November 2006 and won a "Best of N.H. Film" award. Straight Forward began pre-production in late summer of 2004 and took ten days to film in November. Kristen starred in the film, which was a family affair; her mother played the role of Executive Producer.

On October 1, 2005, Vermilyea married Mark Harbaugh of Concord on that same Pembroke farm. They had a baby girl in the fall of 2009. Vermilyea is a 1991 graduate from UNH and holds a BA in English from the University. Kristen was hired as the communications and events coordinator for the New Hampshire Department of Cultural Resources in November 2005. The New Hampshire Department of Cultural Resources is the umbrella for the New Hampshire Film Office, Arts Council and State Library.
