New Hampshire Olympians in 2006

2006 Granite State Olympians

The men and women on this page went to Torino, Italy with aspirations of winning a gold medal for their country and bragging rights to the title "Best in the World." These athletes with ties to New Hampshire made up only a small portion of the athletes that represented a multitude of countries in Italy for the 2006 Olympics.
Jimmy CochranJimmy Cochran
Birthdate: May 29, 1981
Event: Alpine Skiing
NH Connection: Lives in Keene.
Previous Olympics: none
Fast Fact: His grandfather was the U.S. head coach in 1974, and his dad and three aunts were also Olympians.
Update From Torino:
  • Cochran raced to a respectful 12th place in the Men's Slalom event on Saturday, February 25.
Tricia Dunn-LuomaTricia Dunn-Luoma
Birthdate: April 25, 1974
Event: Ice Hockey
NH Connection: She's from Derry and went to college in NH.
Previous Olympics: 1998, 2002
Fast Fact: Tricia travels with a stuffed bear named Felix.
Update From Torino:
  • Tricia made one goal in the February 11 game against Switzerland, helping Team USA to win 6-0.
  • Tricia had three penalties in the February 14 game against Finland. The U.S. won the game 7-3.
  • A 3-2 loss to Sweden on February 17.
  • Team USA earns a bronze medal in their final game against Finland on February 20. The score was 4-0.
Kris FreemanKris Freeman
Birthdate: October 14, 1980
Event: Cross Country Skiing
NH Connection: Born in Concord. Lives in Andover.
Previous Olympics: 2002
Fast Fact: Kris was diagnosed with diabetes at age 20.

  • Freeman placed 22nd, coming in first for the American team in the 15km Men's Classical
Hannah KearneyHannah Kearney
Birthdate: February 26, 1986
Event: Freestyle Skiing
NH Connection: Born in Hanover.
Previous Olympics: N/A
Fast Fact: Kearney can be found on the slopes by her hairdo - two braids adorned with flowers sticking out of her helmet.
Update From Torino:
  • The World Champion never made it through Qualifying on Saturday, February 11. She finished in 22nd place with a disappointing score of 20.80
Katie KingKatie King
Birthdate: May 24, 1975
Event: Ice Hockey
NH Connection: Lives in Salem.
Previous Olympics: 1998, 2002
Fast Fact: Katie is a huge Red Sox fan. Her favorite athlete is Jason Varitek.
Update From Torino:
  • Katie scored the first goal in the opening game against Switzerland. The U.S. Team won the game 6-0.
  • Katie made one goal and 2 assists in the game on Sunday, February 12. Team USA played Germany and won with a final of 5-0.
  • One more goal by Katie and the team is poised to take the ice in the Semi-Finals. Their final score in the February 14th game against Finland was 7-3.
  • A 3-2 loss to Sweden on February 17.
  • A hat-trick by Katie helps win the team's final game against Finland on February 20, earning Team USA a bronze medal.
Bode MillerBode Miller
Birthdate: October 12, 1977
Event: Alpine Skiing
NH Connection: Born in Easton. Lives in Bretton Woods.
Previous Olympics: 1998, 2002
Fast Fact: Bode was home-schooled and lived on 500 acres in New Hampshire's White Mountains without electricity or running water growing up.
Update From Torino:
  • Miller earned the 18th start position, an ideal spot (in the middle of the pack), during Qualifying on Saturday, February 11.
  • Miller took 5th place in the Men's Downhill on February 12.
  • Bode was disqualified for straddling a gate during the Men's Combined on Tuesday, February 14. Before the disqualification, his time was strong enough to possibly earn him a medal.
  • February 18: Miller is still struggling. In Saturday's Super G race, he failed to take a turn properly and did not end up finishing.
  • February 20: Bode tied for 6th place in the Men's Giant Slalom
  • February 25: Bode did not finish the final race, skidding off the course during the Men's Slalom event.
Jonathan MylesJonathan Myles
Birthdate: July 24, 1982
Event: Luge
NH Connection: Born in Plymouth. Lives in Rumney.
Previous Olympics: N/A
Fast Fact: Myles is an avid rock climber and says he might like to try his hand at drag racing when his luge career is over.
Update From Torino:
  • Myles placed 19 after the first 2 runs on Saturday, February 11. During his 1st run, his time was 52.579 and his 2nd run came in at 52.267.
  • On Sunday, February 12, Myles clocked in at 52.230 and 52.332 during his last two runs earning him a final spot in the top 20 in 18th place.
Carl Van LoanCarl Van Loan
Birthdate: August 20, 1980
Event: Nordic Combined
NH Connection: Lives in Webster.
Previous Olympics: 2002
Fast Fact: Van Loan comes from a medical family; his father is a doctor and his mother is a nurse.
Update From Torino:
  • Carl was called the "Weakest Link" by one of his teammates on Thursday, February 16. Ouch! However, Van Loan admitted to being the "least productive" member of the team. "It was not my best performance and I'm sorry to the team I let them down. That's the best I had and I gave it everything," he was quoted as saying.
  • Despite the bickering on the team, the U.S. managed to place 7th in this event.
