BEDFORD — The Fresh Market plans to close its store at 79 S. River Road as part of a plan to shutter 15 stores nationwide.

“Over the last eight months, our company has been executing a turnaround plan and we’ve seen great progress,” CEO Larry Appel said in a statement Monday.

“However, for a variety of reasons unique to each retail location, that progress is not evenly distributed and, as a result, we have decided to close these long-term, underperforming stores.”

The Fresh Market opened in 2012 at the Bedford Mall, a year before Market Basket opened a new store in town.

Fresh Market found itself facing a new round of competition in 2016 with the arrival of Whole Foods Market and a new Hannaford prototype store, both on South River Road.

Each offers made-to-order takeout foods, gourmet meats and cheeses, organic produce and other amenities.

Fresh Market said it also plans to close stores in Georgia, Illinois, Indiana, Kentucky, North Carolina, Tennessee, Virginia and Wisconsin.

The Greensboro, N.C., company, which operates 176 stores in 24 states, said the decision was made based on its overall growth strategy and that it did not expect any further closings “in the foreseeable future.”
