NEWMARKET — A Newmarket doctor accused of sexually assaulting an adult patient is now free on $100,000 cash bail and is expected to be arraigned later this week.
Dr. Hugh MacDonald, 57, of Newfields, was released from the Rockingham County jail after posting bail following his arrest Friday on seven counts of aggravated felonious sexual assault.
MacDonald would have been arraigned Monday if he hadn’t made bail. The Rockingham County Attorney’s Office said he would likely be arraigned Friday morning in Rockingham County Superior Court.
Newmarket police arrested MacDonald Friday afternoon at his office at Great Bay Family Practice, which is part of Wentworth-Douglass Hospital in Dover.
A hospital spokeswoman has said MacDonald, who is on the hospital’s medical staff, has been suspended.
MacDonald was arrested after a monthlong criminal investigation by Newmarket police detectives with assistance from the Child Advocacy Center in Portsmouth, the Rockingham County Attorney’s Office and the New Hampshire Attorney General’s Office, police said.
