MANCHESTER — A city man was arrested Monday, accused of severely beating a woman after a traffic accident on Interstate 93 in Massachusetts last week, police said Tuesday.

Joseph Falero, 37, was taken into custody at 7:50 a.m. inside his Myrtle Street apartment, city police said.

A warrant for Fallero charged him with assault with intent to murder, assault with a dangerous weapon and motor-vehicle violations, according to Massachusetts State Police.

Bay State troopers responded March 6 to a report of a woman being assaulted on the side of I-93 North in Methuen shortly after 8:20 p.m.

Troopers found the 30-year-old woman “suffering from significant injuries and facial lacerations,” Massachusetts State Police said. “The woman was covered in mud and snow and appeared to be in shock.”

Police determined a man driving a Honda Civic had sideswiped her car before both drivers got out of their vehicles.

“When the woman attempted to call police, the man began severely beating her in the face, and when she fell to the ground he kicked her in the face, neck, and back,” according to the Massachusetts police statement. “The woman began to lose consciousness.”

The man fled and his Honda Civic was later found abandoned in Manchester.

Troopers from the Massachusetts State Police violent fugitive apprehension section “developed intelligence that led them to set up surveillance yesterday (Monday), along with local police, on the residence in Manchester,” Massachusetts police said.

Falero was taken into custody a short time later and charged as a fugitive from justice.

Falero on Tuesday was ordered held on $5,000 cash or surety bail and faced an extradition hearing in April, according to a court clerk.
