Pelham police: DWI crashes on back-to-back nights

PELHAM — Two traffic accidents on consecutive nights led to drunk-driving charges leveled against the two drivers, police said Sunday.
Katherine Miller, 25, of Salem, was driving a silver 2013 Volkswagen Passat west on Greeley Road toward Mammoth Road, where she failed to negotiate a turn, crossed the center line and crashed into a boulder on the opposite side of the road on Sunday, police said.
Police said officers and the tow-truck driver noticed signs of impairment. The car was heavily damaged. Police said alcohol impairment was a factor and Miller was charged with driving under the influence.
Early Saturday, OnStar, a service that alerts authorities when a vehicle is involved in an accident, reported a blue 2017 Chevrolet Camaro crashed into a yard on Island Pond Road and the car’s air bags deployed. OnStar relayed that the driver said he swerved to avoid an animal and he was bleeding from the nose. Two other people called 911 to report the crash.
Daniel Sweeney, 27, of Pelham, was the driver, but he refused medical treatment for a bloody nose, authorities said. Sweeney refused to discuss the crash. Police said it appeared Sweeney was driving north on Island Pond Road toward Dutton Road, failed to negotiate a turn, struck a tree and launched deep into the front yard of 12 Island Pond Road.
Sweeney, authorities said, was charged with driving under the influence; driving under the influence, second offense; and reckless operation. Police said speed and alcohol impairment were factors.
Both drivers are slated for arraignment Aug. 28.
