BARRINGTON — Police in Barrington are warning the public after a woman called to report heroin inside a package of Haribo Gold-Bears Gummi Candy.

Chief Bob Williams said the package had been mailed to the resident’s adult son, who struggles with drug problems, after he ordered it from the dark web.

Police used a field test kit to determine that the brown powder was heroin.

Police do not believe the gummy bears came directly from a factory. The package appeared to be unopened but there was a very small area where it had been resealed.

Williams said they were notified Thursday afternoon and an investigation is underway. A member of his department sent out the warning on Facebook.

“We wanted to make sure it got out into the community to try and protect kids. Too often, people are living in a household with an addicted adult and there are children,” Williams said.

Anyone with information is asked to call police at 664-7679.
