CONCORD — A registered sex offender from Concord has been arrested on charges he allegedly sexually assaulted a young child.

John Lessor, 64, of Concord, was arrested Wednesday on a charge of aggravated felonious sexual assault, Concord police. Lt. Sean Ford said.

According to Ford, Concord detectives began an investigation last week after being contacted by officials at the Merrimack Valley School District. School officials told police members of the community had approached them, saying Lessor had been spending a lot of time with a young child whose parent he had befriended, and to whom he was not related. Some of that time was unsupervised, officials said.

After learning Lessor was a registered sex offender, school officials contacted police.

After an investigation, police said Lessor had sexually assaulted the child over a period of time and that the assaults were ongoing.

An arrest warrant was issued, and Lessor was taken into custody without incident around 12:30 p.m. Wednesday. Police said additional charges may be possible.

Lessor is due to be arraigned today at 1 p.m. in Merrimack County Superior Court.
