DERRY — An anonymous tip led police Tuesday to a stolen Harley-Davidson valued at $85,000, but two other custom bikes taken from the same quarter-mile radius remain missing.
Capt. Vern Thomas said between Sept. 28 and Oct. 6, a total of five motorcycles were stolen from the same neighborhood. He said it’s probable that all the thefts were committed by the same individual.
No one has been arrested as of Wednesday, but the investigation is ongoing.
“We have a number of leads that we’re working on right now,” Thomas said.
Darryl Sargent, owner of the $85,000 Harley, said it was found near the Fairways Apartments.
“Someone spotted a tarp in the woods,” Thomas said.
Sargent had turned to social media for help in locating his stolen motorcycle on Saturday; his Facepost post was shared about 20,000 times.
He said he’s put about 700 hours of labor into the bike over the last four years.
He is the owner of Kandyman Kustom Paint, which specializes in custom motorcycle paint. He’s been doing the work in Derry for about 18 years.
Sargent said he has no idea who might have stolen the bike. But he said he’s thrilled to have it back.
“It’s like I got my kid back from being kidnapped,” Sargent said. “It’s more than just a motorcycle. I put every bit of my heart and soul into it.”
Sargent said he is grateful to police for the work they did to find his bike.
The thefts also appear to have some connections to motorcycle thefts in other nearby communities, police say.
When police found a Honda stolen from Derry, it was located off an embankment in Manchester alongside another motorcycle that had been reported stolen from Hooksett. And when a Triumph stolen from Derry was recovered in Derry, it was found with another bike that was stolen from Manchester.
The two unrecovered stolen bikes from Derry are custom Harley-Davidsons.
“They should be kind of distinctive to the people who know those bikes,” Thomas said
