Updated, 12:49 p.m. The trial of Andre Rivera, the alleged ringleader behind a home invasion that led to the death of a Derry man, opened today in Rockingham County Superior Court. Rivera is charged with being an accomplice to second-degree murder in the killing of Jason Violette.

"It is with sadness today that we learned that our son, brother and husband, Marine Captain Kyle R. Van De Giesen, was killed today in the line of duty in Afghanistan," his family said in a statement yesterday.

IN AUGUST 2008, Brian Harris noticed a loose branch hanging from a tree in his Merrimack yard, just above a power line. Harris used his pruners to cut the limb. The branch fell onto the line, resulting in a year-long hassle and one big bill from the power company. "If we would've had any idea what we were getting into, we would've left it alone," said Deanne Harris, Brian's wife.

Updated, 6:44 a.m. Michael F. Limosani, 20, of Salem died in a motorcycle crash on Brookdale Road. A second motorcyclist, William Childs, 21, also of Salem, was also injured in yesterday's accident.
