What you need to know about Facebook's newsfeed update

Mark Zuckerberg recently announced that Facebook would be changing its newsfeed algorithm. The major change is that it will be prioritizing meaningful content, especially content from friends and family.

Businesses will still be able to interact with people on Facebook, but those who saw a lack of interaction will notice a dramatic decline in their organic reach. This is because Facebook wants to provide a better experience that promotes its users’ well-being, and its research showed that more genuine interactions between friends and family does that.

What You Should Be Doing

Focus on Meaningful Content - If you are posting content and no one is commenting, liking, or sharing, then you don’t have meaningful engagement, according to Facebook. You should aim your content toward creating a conversation. You can ignite conversation between you and your followers or conversation amongst your followers. Self-serving content hasn’t had much of a place in social media for a while. If you are still posting a lot of self-serving content, it’s time to get rid of it. Each piece of content that you share should serve a specific purpose.

Use Video - There are some types of content that naturally spark more interactions, and video is one of them. In the recent newsfeed update, Adam Mosseri said, “Live videos often lead to discussion among viewers on Facebook–in fact, live videos on average get six times as many interactions as regular videos. Many creators who post videos on Facebook prompt discussion among their followers.” If you’re not ready to do live videos, produced videos still perform better than both links and images.

Ask Followers to Mark Your Page As “See First” - If you have a loyal fan-base but you are worried about your content getting lost in the sea of Facebook algorithm changes. Simply ask your followers to mark your page as “See First” so that they won’t miss any of your posts. You may not get all of your audience to mark your page this way, but, for those that do, you know that you will have at least some engaged fans.

Use Facebook Groups - Groups are a perfect way to build an active and engaged community around certain topics. People are always looking for a way to connect with like-minded people. Groups can generate conversations among your audience. By creating a Facebook Group for your community, you are creating a space where it can interact.

And don’t forget that advertising is still an option. Facebook Ads won’t be affected by this algorithm change, only organic reach. But being choosy about what you promote will be important, so that you can maximize the benefits of both.
