MANCHESTER — The New Hampshire Fisher Cats failed to drum up any fireworks at the plate while falling, 5-3, to the Reading Fightin Phils in the opener of a five-game series on Wednesday at Northeast Delta Dental Stadium. New Hampshire scored three times in the first inning but was silenced thereafter while Reading found its groove late, tying the game with a run in the seventh and taking the lead for good with a two-run eighth.
Reading scored two runs off Fisher Cats starter Justin Dillon through the first six innings before finding better luck against New Hampshire’s bullpen. Deivi Grullon’s second sacrifice fly of the game tied the game 3-3 in the seventh while Cornelius Randolph scored the go-ahead run in eighth on a wild pitch by New Hampshire reliever Dusty Isaacs. Reading capped its night with one more tally in the eighth on a Zach Green RBI single.
New Hampshire’s first-inning attack came on an RBI triple from Connor Panas, who went on to score along with Harold Ramirez, courtesy of two Reading errors later in the inning.
That’s all the Fisher Cats would muster though as they stranded 14 men on base while three Fightin Phils pitchers limited New Hampshire to just five hits and no runs after the first inning.
Dillon gave New Hampshire an opportunity to get away with a win, scattering four hits and striking out three across his six innings for a no decision.
The Fisher Cats will look to get back on track as they continue the series with the Fightin Phils tonight at 7:10 p.m.
