INNOVATION: Plexxi builds networks for enterprises, governments and service providers who are building clouds — public, private and hybrid. Plexxi takes a software approach to networking, allowing companies to achieve the full potential of their data and applications through a software-defined, single-tier network. Plexxi’s products and integrated solutions create an optimized application environment for agile data centers, scale-out applications like Big Data and distributed cloud environments.

LEADERSHIP: Rich Napolitano joined Plexxi as CEO in 2014 and brought with him more than 30 years in the information technology industry. Prior to becoming CEO, he served as a member of Plexxi’s board and was most recently the head of EMC’s Unified Storage Division, where he was responsible for more than $4 billion in annual revenue and 2,000 employees. Earlier in his career, Napolitano held both sales and engineering roles and acted as a founder and venture capitalist across companies like Sun Microsystems, Pirus Networks and Alchemy Angels.

WORKFORCE: Plexxi, headquartered in Nashua, currently has 85 employees. The employee base is comprised mostly of New Hampshire and Massachusetts residents.

HISTORY: Launched in 2012, Plexxi was founded by current Chief Technical Officer and Executive Vice President of Products & Technology Dave Husak and Vice-President of Product Management Mat Mathews. In December 2012, Plexxi introduced the industry’s first software-defined network (SDN) system. Based on affinity networking, Plexxi created network connections by rendering and implementing efficient topologies based on actual workload needs. In the years since, Plexxi has retained its affinities approach and also shifted to focusing on developing optimized application environments for agile data centers, scale-out applications and distributed cloud environments.

COMMUNITY: Individuals at Plexxi are involved in the community on different personal levels, from supporting school-sponsored robotics teams to working with young female leaders in high tech.

TECHNOLOGY: Plexxi is building better networks for cloud builders. The next era of IT has new kinds of applications and requirements, and new IT architectures are needed to meet requirements for agility, integration and simplicity. There are new IT consumption models emerging, such as IT as a service in the public cloud and IT as a converged offering in the private cloud. Plexxi is building solutions that are scalable, dynamic and responsive. Its software is intelligent, automated and application-driven, and provides processes and tools cloud builders can leverage to efficiently transition to the next era of IT.

SPOTLIGHT: Plexxi has been recognized across the industry and region, and was most recently named Nutanix Elevate Partner of the Year for 2017, CRN’s 2017 Software-Defined Data Center 50, Global Telecoms Business Innovation Award for the World’s Largest Software Defined Network for 2016 and New Hampshire High Tech Council’s Product of the Year for 2015.

HOT HIRE: Rich Napolitano, CEO

Napolitano, who previously worked with Digital Equipment Corp. in New Hampshire in the 1980s, moved to Massachusetts about five years ago.

“When the Plexxi opportunity came about, New Hampshire and its business and work climate were top of mind,” Napolitano said. “Shortly after I became CEO, we consolidated our Cambridge and San Francisco offices and moved our headquarters to Nashua, which offered a great workspace, great location for attracting talent and close proximity to Mass high tech.”
