The Denver Broncos cut quarterback Paxton Lynch and claimed quarterback Kevin Hogan on waivers from Washington, according to multiple reports Sunday.

Hogan will step into the third-string role with the Broncos, behind starter Case Keenum and backup Chad Kelly.

While Lynch made the 53-man roster on Saturday, general manager John Elway made it clear the 24-year-old wasn’t a sure bet to stick with the team.

“The wire just came out,” Elway said Saturday.

The Kansas City Chiefs selected Hogan, a Stanford product, in the fifth round of the 2016 NFL Draft but released him before the season started. Cleveland signed him, then traded him earlier this year to Washington for a sixth-round pick. Despite being the Redskins’ leading passer on the preseason, the team waived him Saturday. He turns 26 next month.

He has appeared in eight NFL games (one start). He has a career 59.4 percent completion percentage, throwing for 621 yards with four touchdowns and seven interceptiions.

The Broncos selected Lynch with the No. 26 overall pick of that same 2016 draft. He started four games for the Broncos, winning just one of them, and has completed 61.7 percent of his passes, throwing for 792 yards with four touchdowns and four interceptions.
