City endorsements: Wards 1 through 6
Tuesday, Oct. 27, 2009 Share on Facebook
Our endorsements for wards 1 through 6 in the Manchester board of aldermen elections on Nov. 3:
Ward 2: Robert O'Sullivan. As a school board member, O'Sullivan spent a lot of time looking for ways to save taxpayer money. He championed the proposal to eliminate health benefits for the school board members, and he even helped write and propose an alternative budget designed to save teacher jobs while still cutting spending. He has shown that he doesn't just talk about streamlining city government, he works to do something about it. Manchester needs more aldermen who behave that way.
Ward 4: Leo Pepino. State Rep. Leo Pepino has served Ward 4 as an alderman off and on since 1980. A Navy veteran of World War II, Pepino is a fiscal conservative who knows his ward well, knows the city well and is dedicated to leaving the city better than he found it. He supports capping spending to keep taxes from becoming too burdensome for the city's homeowners. The voters ought to give him another chance to serve the city he loves so much.
Ward 5: Ed Osborne. Last year, Ed Osborne bucked the majority of his fellow Democrats on the board and voted to let the spending cap go before the voters. A year later, he still supports the cap, while his opponent does not. Osborne is a classic constituent-services alderman. He might not be a leader on the board, but he fights hard for his ward and is known as one of the more responsive aldermen. Ward 5 voters would do well to send him back for another term.
Ward 6: Will Infantine. Over the years, Infantine has proved himself as someone who is deeply concerned about both city services and spending. He supports the spending cap and wants aldermen to work on improving the city budget instead of simply increasing it every year. He believes that more can be done with less, and that's the kind of thinking we need at City Hall, especially during this recession when the average taxpayer has to apply that principle to his own personal budget.

Greg Barrett of Manchester, perhaps the policies and past decisions of the candidates for Wards 1 and 3 were not good enough for the Union Leader to make an endorsement. It is not partisanship, considering the Ward 5 endorsement. There is much credibility in these endorsements.

I encourage Manchester citizens to vote Mark E. Roy for mayor. Mark E. Roy has been serving Manchester for many years and he would make an absolutely great mayor. Throughout his career, he has been fighting for advancment in oublic education as well as promoting the safety measures taken within schools. As a father himself, he has a great concern for the facilities in schools around Manchester and New Hampshire. He was vice chairman of the Citizens Task Force, a group that has advocated for improvemane in our public schools.
Throughout his career, Mark has always considered the future generations and has shown great fiscal responsibility. Mark E. Roy has always shown fiscal responsibility by considering the people before he makes a decision. He has always advocated for a fair tax system that doesn't hurt the middle class.
In order for Mark to continue his great work on education and fiscal responsibility. He needs a Democratic school board that will be willing to work together. so please, vote Democratic on Nov. 3rd.

To Rich Alpert:
Yeah right, I could see JKL, Hirschmann, and Sullivan on the same board. There would be a lot more than just a hole in the wall.

Perhaps the Union Leader has determined that neither of the candidates in Ward 3 are deserving of an endorsement. Pat Long was a do-nothing party hack, Joe Levasseur was a disruptive loudmouth. Neither were any good the first time around.
Ward 3 voters should send a message and write in Peter Sullivan, an alderman who has been fiscally conservative and independent minded.
- Rich Alpert, Manchester
From a ward three resident; thanks for nothing.
- Greg Salts, Manchester
I see NO credibility for these endorsements since I see no mention of Ward 1 or Ward 3. That makes me think that Union Leader political partisonship trumps good sense.
- Greg Barrett, Manchester
Who does the Union Leader like for Alderman in Ward 1?

Uh, I think you miss a couple of wards. How can we possibly take you guys seriously now?

What happened to your Ward 3 endorsement? You can't post "here are our ward 1 through 6 endorsements" and skip a ward.
If you have no endorsement for ward 3 then come out and say: "Ward 3: No endorsement."
